Gun Control is not the Answer

Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School is yet another horrific incident demonstrating the failure of every level of the United States Government to identify an epidemic and act accordingly.  The current Commander in Chief seems more concerned about tweeting “fake news” as he points cyber middle fingers at the media instead of dedicating precious time and resources to serious problems happening here on American soil. Problems that include suicide being the 2nd leading cause of death in 2016 among people ages 10-34 years old (CDC) taking the lives of 13,525 in these age groups and over 44,000 lives overall. Of the age groups 10-64 years old, there were more deaths by suicide than homicides. Let me stress this a little more, there were more deaths by suicide than homicides.

Beefing up gun control laws won’t prevent depression, body shaming, impulsive behaviors, suicidal ideation, bullying, anxiety, PTSD, etc. I think we should appreciate the passion of those that think stricter gun control laws will help; however, we need to get to the root of the problem.

Everyone knows the famous motivational iceberg photo depicting problems deep below the surface. Below is my version of the iceberg showing some of the root causes of these school shootings and saddening suicide rates statistics. I challenge the US Government to dedicate precious resources on increasing funding to inpatient and outpatient mental health facilities for all ages, integrating mandatory daily mental health promotion curriculum in public schools (K-12), and increasing physical education requirements to meet recommended daily activity guidelines.

Let’s get Americans physically, financially, and mentally healthy.
